HISTORY

This history of West Valley Arts began in 2003, at what is now the Utah Cultural Celebration Center in West Valley City, Utah. With most arts programs and activities concentrated toward the east side of the Salt Lake Valley, West Valley City residents are  significantly disadvantaged in access to the arts due to socio-economic barriers and lack of transportation.

It was there at the idea was born under the guidance of X and Y from the community. This is how the roots of West Valley Arts were born and grew into one of the iconic landmarks of the most diverse city in Utah.

2003

In 2003, the Utah Cultural Celebration Center (UCCC) was created to provide a place where people from all walks of life can come together on the Valley’s West side, to share ideas; inspire, nurture, and learn from one another; enjoy arts and cultural experiences; concerts and performing arts. It is also a place for businesses, individuals and other groups to gather for conferences, seminars, ceremonies, and other special events.  Public arts and cultural programs at the UCCC serve nearly 56,000 patrons annually.

2012

In 2012, the Utah Cultural Celebration Center Foundation was created to support the work of the West Valley City Division of Arts and Culture through programming that included art exhibits, concerts, and public education programs that were traditionally housed at the Utah Cultural Celebration Center.

2017

In 2017, after 20 years at Harman Hall, Hale Centre Theatre left West Valley for a new building.   In 2019, two years after the close of Hale Centre Theatre, West Valley City decided to develop and implement a plan for reintegrating this beautiful facility into the community. With a long history of community theater programming at the UCCC, West Valley City decided to launch a professional theater program.

2019

In 2019, the board of directors made the decision to change the name of the Utah Cultural Celebration Center Foundation to the West Valley Arts Foundation or West Valley Arts.  For many years, the Utah Cultural Celebration Center has functioned as the primary facility to the Division of Arts and Culture providing events, arts programming, and arts educational opportunities for West Valley citizens and the greater Wasatch Front.   Recently, we have grown to include the West Valley Performing Arts Center, and we have embarked on an exciting city-wide public arts program. The decision to change our name reflects our growth as an organization, desire to be more inclusive of our community, and better demonstrate our mission and purpose.
