Cogs and Screws: Exploring Soviet Idealism
On View: November, 18, 2021 - February 23, 2022
Location: Celebration Gallery, Utah Cultural Celebration Center Free Admission Described as Socialist Realism, Russian art during the Soviet era was strong, overtly ideological, idealistic, and vulnerable at the same time. Referring to art as the "Cogs and Screws" of revolution, Vladimir Lenin set the stage for art to reflect Soviet society while also being aspirational. It was “optimistic in spirit, realist in style, and supportive of the Soviet cause.” War and conflict were an integral part of the Soviet experience; the Great Patriotic war (World War II) and the Cold War were times of great sacrifice for the ideals of the Soviet Union. Art led the way, shaping the narrative stories and memories of Soviet individuals and communities--venerating the working class, the soldiers and sailors, and farmers as the true Soviet heroes.

Small Pleasures
Sculpture by Jonna Ramey
July 5-Sept 29, 2021 Monday - Thursday 9 am-5 pm Bridge Gallery Not all stone sculpture is monumental. As a sculptor, Jonna Ramey works out ideas quickly on a small piece before she translate them to larger stones. Jonna finds a quiet joy in carving small, working a stone on her lap as she chats with other carvers. In addition, she recognizes that people can be intimidated by large sculptures but warm immediately to small, intimate pieces that invite touch and quiet contemplation. “Small Pleasures” is a collection of sculptures that are compelling and accessible. These pieces excite the imagination, invite questions, and please the eye.

Caturday Evening Post Covers, 1912-1940
By Shu Yamamoto
July 5-Sept 29, 2021 Monday - Thursday 9 am-5 pm Crescent Gallery A look back at Ameowrican Hisstory with the Caturday Evening Post.
About the Artist: Shu Yamamoto was born in Yokohama, Japan. He had graduated from the Aichi Prefectural University of Art and Music, earned a BA in industrial design. He immigrated to Canada in 1973 and worked as a freelance illustrator. After 10 years in Canada, he moved to Utah in 1983 where he has lived since with his wife and four children. His cat project started in 2007 when he saw a color pencil drawing done by one of his four children. It was an imitation of the self portrait of Van Gogh. All was done in Van Gogh style, but the only difference was Van Gogh’s face was replaced with a cat’s face. That gave Shu a thought: It works great on this, but would it work on other paintings? Since then he hasn’t stopped painting cats in a similar manner replicating works of art but changing the characters into felines. So far 500 paintings have been done either on canvas, on illustration boards or on photoshop. |
