Santa Calaca
Santa Calaca, a local crafts store owned by a Latina woman, brings authentic, Mexican, hand-made art to Utah.
All the art is made from ceramic, wood, and other organic elements. The art is painted and carved by hand by artisans from Puebla, Morelos, Cuernavaca, and Mexico City. For the past three years, Santa Calaca has participated in the Utah Cultural Celebration Center's Day of the Dead event, bringing the whole tradition of this celebration from Mexico to Utah. Come and meet the Alebrijes, Catrinas, and Ceramic Skulls, symbols of Mexican tradition and culture! |
VIVA
Joe Brown, the artist behind VIVA, has always felt a connection to the joyfulness and vibrant colors of Mexican culture. Like many others, he is inspired by Frida Kahlo; specifically, how she used art to overcome the many challenges she faced in her life. Joe is also influenced by Dia de los Muertos and the way it celebrates the life of our loved ones who have passed.
Each of the ceramic calaveras are hand painted. The mixed media artwork is created with drawings and photographs that are combined digitally. They are then printed and adhered to canvas and hand embellished. |
Lolavee Creative
Lola Reyes-Grant, the artist also known as Lolavee Creative, works as a graphic designer and artisan in Utah. She is inspired by her family and community and seeks to blend that inspiration with symbols of resilience and compassion. Her works include digital illustration and papel picado (cut paper art). Her accomplishments include a public art installation and a papel picado collage that was acquired by the Alice Merril Horne Art Collection. Lola Reyes-Grant received her BFA from the University of Utah and an MFA from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco.
