West Valley Arts' annual La Catrina / El Catrín contest will be held in-person at the Day of the Dead celebration.
West Valley Arts reserves the right to reject any participant whose costume is deemed to be inappropriate, or does not meet the Day of the Dead themed requirements. Gore, graphic violence, nudity, swearing, or other objectionable elements may be grounds for disqualification as determined by West Valley Arts staff. |

Catrina / El Catrin Contest Rules
- All contestants MUST register and be approved by West Valley Arts staff prior to contest check-in at 4:45 p.m.
- There will be three entry categories: Youth 13 and under, Adult Age 14 and Over, and Group. You can only be entered into one category.
- No dressing facilities will be provided. Please arrive in costume.
- No entries will be accepted after registration has concluded at 4:45 p.m. Contestants who are late to check-in will not be allowed in the procession.
- The West Valley Arts reserves the right to reject any participant whose costume is deemed to be inappropriate, inadequate, or does not meet the Day of the Dead themed requirements. This is not Halloween.
- Any participant may be disqualified from the contest by West Valley Arts staff for failure to observe any rules.
- The Day of the Dead Celebration attracts many families each year, and we wish to maintain a comfortable atmosphere for all spectators, while honoring the tradition and roots of Day of the Dead. Good taste must be used in the creation and presentation of all Catrinas. Gore, graphic violence, nudity, swearing, or other objectionable elements may be grounds for disqualification as determined by West Valley Arts staff.
- Any items that present the possibility of damage to the entrants, their costumes, the audience, or the facility are prohibited. Weapons and or replicas, fires and liquids are prohibited.
- Entrants are responsible for their own belongings. We are unable to provide a secure area for personal items. Any items left over at the conclusion of the event are not the responsibility of West Valley Arts staff or the Utah Cultural Celebration Center.
Awards
Awards for the 2022 Day of the Dead / Dia de los Muertos Catrina / El Catrín Contest in each category are the following:
- 1st Place $100
- 2nd Place $75
- 3rd Place $50
FAQs
Do I have to dress as La Catrina / El Catrin?
We encourage guests to dress up as La Catrina / El Catrin in their own creative way and support Dia de los Muertos.
However, this is NOT a Halloween costume contest. Please leave your Halloween costumes at home.
Can I enter multiple categories?
Only one category per contestant is allowed. It is your responsibility to decide which category you want to participate in.
How do I know which category is for me?
The categories for the catrina contest are as follows:
Note: All minors must have a parent or guardian on-site to check them into the contest. If you need help on stage you may have someone else help, as long as they are not dressed in a costume. If you need help on stage, you may have someone else help you, as long as they are not dressed in a costume. We recommend that person dress in dark colors so attention is on you, the contestant.
Can I enter into the contest if I live out of state or country?
Yes! As long as you are at the event in-person by check-in, you will be able to participate.
How are you choosing a winner?
This year, we are inviting our community to vote! At the event, attendees will be invited to vote online with their cell phones or at West Valley Arts Booth where they will have a voting center.
Do I have to be present to win?
Yes, you must be present at the contest to win.
