The Western Federation of Watercolor Societies (WFWS) was formed in 1976 by the New Mexico Watercolor Society and included nine other watercolor societies. The purpose was to make a large and prestigious watercolor exhibition available at low cost to members for small and often isolated watercolor groups.
Today, the WFWS includes over 5,000 artists in ten regional watercolor societies and guilds. The WFWS encourages and recognizes artistic excellence and works to increase visibility of watercolor as an artistic medium through our annual juried exhibitions. The exhibitions are sponsored by WFWS and hosted by a regional member society. Each society hosts the show on a rotating basis.

Whidbey Artisan by David Amsellem
AWA - "Visiting Whidbey Island a few summers ago, it was a beautiful time on the Island with a gathering of artists of all kinds and musicians. i was able to observe an artisan working his craft of glass blowing. He had a very busy board with so many varying sizes of paper post-its, tubes, poles, buckets, towels and tools throughout. It was quite the commotion all around him, however, he was very focused on his task and it was interesting to watch. I tried to depict the artisan with the appropriate light and commotion all around him while he was practicing his craft."

Conquest of the Wind by Ruth Andrews-Vreeland
NMWS - "I really do love the Fall so much, when leaves turn such beautiful colors. But my joy is tinged with sadness when they fall from the trees, and wither on the ground ... turning into parchment-paper-thin skeletons which crumble into dust. Truly, conquests of the wind, and victims of Summer's death. This "portrait" of dying leaves is representative of all those feelings for me."

Tibetan Woman Series - Everyday Buddhist by Yidan Guo
IWS - "Everyday Buddhist is from my Tibetan Woman series. In this series I depicted four Tibetan mother's images, who were of different ages. I met these women during journeys that I made to Tibet in the past years. Tibetan people have a unique religious culture, live an authentic and simple lifestyle. They are strong, resilient, and peaceful. I had always loved the Tibetan people, their unique Buddhist culture, and the magnificent scenery of Tibet. In this series, all the women were represented in their daily life. They are wearing distinguishable folk clothing and in settings with Tibetan Buddhist motifs in their background. I stayed at this old mother's house for a week during one trip in Tibet. She was in her 80's and still participated daily labor. When she took breaks, she kept practicing daily buddhist meditation. She passed away a few years after my visit. her soul is in peace forever."

Eyes on You by Kim Johnson
AWA - "I love to capture life, to use color to express the joy of living combined with the pleasure I get from the medium. As life brings new experiences to me as a person, there's an exponential increase in confidence to my expression of life through color. I particularly enjoy the challenge of carefully working out a composition without losing spontaneity. Most of my paints are Daniel Smith, but I also have some Winsor and Newton, and Holbein on my pallet. My preference is 300-pound hot press Fabriano Artistico paper."

Beehive State Award of Excellence: Windowpane No. 46 by Stanley Kurth
AWA - "Intuitive painting is the act of making marks and spreading pigment on a surface until it conveys a personal aesthetic. There is no predetermined finish or elaborate planning. My paintings are expressions of my life experience, everything which has touched and moved me along a path to the latest work. If the work fails to speak visually, no amount of esoteric rhetoric here will change it. Painting is a discipline which requires practice, passion, devotion, focus and a steadfast spirit of pursuing something which will never be attained."

Inspired by the ornate, interesting shapes and vivid colors, I arrange my set-ups in natural light to take advantage of the glow-through and dramatic shadows from backlighting. The drawing is composed to incorporate the surrounding border as part of the image and break the subjects and shadows out into it. A Single Infinite Moment by Michelle Nixon
UWS - "A film is made of many slides, one going after another. Each film slide represents form; it is the physical - what we wee. Life is not the summation of all the film slides. It is the invisible pervading force, which determines each film slide. If there are two sequential slides sitting side by side, one slightly different than the other, they each have form - a different form - and their present from does not change. The form is fixed. What causes the first to be different from the second is life. Life continuously constructs and deconstructs form. Each experienced segment of life depends on the entire course, and viewing a specific occurrence in life, separate from the rest, is not an accurate portrayal of life. The exact position or expressive movement of an individual at any given time is, in fact, the result of a lifetime of other movements. One moment represents the culmination. Life, then, is in each moment."

Half a Pair and a Spare by Gay Paratore
SDWS - "I love the "bling" of chrome and reflections in painted metal. I like the contrast caused by the sun on these surfaces, creating the shadows of the car shapes and shadows that are captured on the objects in reflection. Each part of the painting tells a little story about the car itself, the people, and the reflections of the other cars in the exhibition: Keels and Wheels Cours de Elegance, Lakewood Yacht Club, Texas. I hope to give the viewer something to spend time looking at: the details, the colors, the figures, trees, and of course the reflections. It took three months for me to create this painting, as I would change the reflections from the photo that I used to make it more interesting, more colorful, or for better composition. Enjoy, please!"

The Drop by Linda Renaud
CWS - "This is one of the biggest bull moose I have ever seen! He waded into a shallow lake in Rocky Mountain National park. As he foraged for plants on the bottom of the lake he would pick his head up and the water would cascade off his antlers. I captured this image as the last drop fell from his antler. I thought the contrast between the huge moose and that tiny drop was compelling. This painting is a watercolor wax batik. Watercolor wax batiks utilize alternating applications of wax and paint to create a sense of texture, contrasts of light and dark, and luminous layers of color. Once the waxing and painting process is completed the wax is ironed out and voila - the painting is finished."

The Grandest Canyon by Linda Sherman
AWA - "The Grand Canyon is a panorama of constantly changing lighting and scenery. One could paint all their lives and never finish with the possibilities. I am intrigued by the changing lighting conditions throughout the day and seasons. The contrasts between sunlight and shadow are ever fascinating. The subtleties of color are endlessly transforming. I've been fortunate enough to hike and raft through the canyon many times, and so I feel I have formed a bond with this huge, everchanging canyon."

Vegetables on Talavera Mosaic by Kay Smith
NMWS - "Broken pottery pieces in my mosaic creation inspired a still life set up of red bell pepper and onions. Explosive color fresh out of the tube allows me to utilize a direct paint application in a spontaneous manner. Daily drawing keeps me energized and enthusiastic. Viewing my art hopefully allows one to explore each inch of a composition."

Water Excursion by Cecy Turner
SWS - "I ran across this beautiful scene on a hike in Rocky Mountain national park. As I was hiking with non-artists, I didn't have my painting gear with me and took photos. It took a long time for me to decide to paint it, because I knew I needed to think carefully about all the editing and simplification I would have to do, while still keeping the essence of all the details in the scene that I loved."

PowWow Princess by Karyn Vampotic

Vanilla Cliffs by Jodie West
UWS - "My artwork as a watercolorist growing up in Utah represents its vast and diverse landscapes of alpine peaks, rivers, valleys, wildlife and arid red rock deserts with expansive moody skies. These places inspire and remain my artistic playground. However, my work continues to evolve with my travels and a love for a good seascape and the occasional nocturne. My work is an invitation to the viewer to relate and experience the personality of a place. Whether from an outdoor plein air approach or in the studio, I strive to convey the atmosphere of place and time at the mercy of a 2D surface of paper. Armed with a brush, water, pigments, and over 20 years of experience, I am a constant student of nature."
