Summer 2024 Writing and Performing Arts Residency
Date: June 3-27, 2024 (a total of 16 sessions)
Time: Monday-Thursday, 2:00pm-4:00pm Location: West Valley Performing Arts Center Ages: 15-22 Cost: Free This event is limited to 35 participants. Apply by Thursday, May 9, 2024 The Center for Documentary Expression and Art presents “We Are Telling Our Stories.” This four-week writing and performance residency that will engage up to 35 high-school and college-aged youth, ages 15-22. The program will create a space where participants can explore the power of individual and collective writing, storytelling, poetry, music, movement, and performance.
This event is led by David Gonzalez, poet, storyteller, playwright, musician, and recipient of the International Performing Arts for Youth “Lifetime Achievement Award for Sustained Excellence. Together we will: Explore our lives and imaginations Discover messages and meanings embedded in our narratives Shape and share our stories through writing and performance (using poetry, song, music, props, movement, and related theatrical tools) Upon completion, participants will receive: Up to 3 University of Utah elective credits An opportunity to have their writing published in the “We Are Telling Our Stories” 2024 chapbook (a part of the SLCC annual publication series) A $200 stipend |
ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE: Dr. David Gonzalez, a celebrated NYC-based poet, storyteller, playwright, and musician, is this year's artist-in residence. David is a Joseph Campbell Foundation Fellow and the recipient of the International Performing Arts for Youth "Lifetime Achievement Award for Sustained Excellence." His writing has also been featured at Lincoln Center's "Out-of-Doors Festival," Bill Moyers's documentary "Fooling with Words," and NPR's "A Things Considered. David will be joined by award-winning local poets and writers Dr. Masha Shukovich and J.R. Martinez to help participants dive deep into their own stories, connect to what they care about in the world, and receive guidance on how to share and amplify their creative gifts. The residency will culminate in a performance developed through the braiding o individual and collective voices on Wednesday, June 26, 2024.
