Honoring the Heroes of World War II: Support the Code Talkers Memorial Statue
In the annals of World War II, one chapter remains etched in history as a testament to the indomitable spirit of heroism and valor. The Code Talkers, a group of exceptional Native American servicemen, played a pivotal role in safeguarding our freedom. Although the Navajo (or Diné) code talkers are the most well-known, there were code talkers from 14 other Native nations including Comanche, Hopi, Meskwaki, Lakota, Mohawk, Tlingit, Cree and Crow. Now, West Valley Arts invites you to join us in honoring their legacy by contributing to the Code Talkers Memorial Statue, a symbol of our enduring gratitude and respect.
The Code Talkers were an elite group of Native American Marines who used their native languages to create an unbreakable code during WWII. This code played a vital role in securing communications and ensuring the success of crucial military operations. Their unwavering dedication and unparalleled linguistic skills saved countless lives and delivered many victories on the battlefield.
Many may not know of Utah’s unique connection to the Code Talkers. One member, Samuel Tom Holiday, was born in Oljato, Utah on the Navajo reservation. He spent his later years at the Southern Utah Veterans Home in Ivins and passed away there in 2018 at the age of 94. Another Code Talker, Sgt. Allen Dale June, and his wife Virginia were long-time residents of West Valley City. These brave men were our neighbors, and their legacy is part of our shared history. As such, it is only fitting that we pay tribute to their invaluable service here at the Utah Veteran’s Memorial.
This stunning bronze monument will stand as a testament to the courage and sacrifice of the Code Talkers. It will serve as a place of reflection, education, and remembrance for generations to come. We turn to you, our community and supporters, to make this tribute a reality. Your donation will help fund the construction, installation, and maintenance of this awe-inspiring statue. Join us in preserving the history of these unsung heroes, so their legacy may continue to inspire future generations. Donate today and be a part of history in the making.
