West Valley Arts is pleased once again to welcome the Wasatch Camera Club to this year's Utah Travels photography exhibition. Providing commentary on the current pandemic, limiting travel for most, this year's show will reflect our times and be renamed (When) Utah Travels (Again), and is hosted entirely online.

Utah Travels is a photo exhibit highlighting remarkable photographic images captured by Utahns during their diverse, global, travel experiences. The exhibit allows an opportunity for professional and amateur photographers of all ages to publicly present their most distinct travel photos and to share the stories of their experiences with a short descriptive paragraph. Images may represent destinations thousands of miles away or a few miles from home. Photos in this exhibit will reflect the beauty, richness and diversity of people, events, nature, culture and all that celebrates humanity and planet earth.

To purchase prints of items listed as For Sale, please contact Jeff Clay at the Wasatch Camera Club at exhibits@wasatchcameraclub.com

Putuo Dawn
Shanghai, China
Picture
"On the hottest day Shanghai had seen in a hundred years, I went out at 5:30 a.m. to look for early risers before the sun started baking the city, I set up a shot on the ornate Wuning Road Bridge over the Suzhou River, hoping for some good reflections. Just before I clicked the shutter, this gentleman appeared, out for a stroll in his shorts and South Philly t-shirt. Staying cool."

Peak Potala
Lhasa, Tibet
Picture
"In Lhasa, one of the world's most important religious centers, the former home of the Dalai Lama can be seen from most of the city. From the terrace garden of our hotel, I spent three nights attempting to balance the brightly illuminated white palace with the last light of the darkening sky. The third time's a charm."

Chiesa di Santa Maddalena
Santa Maddalena, Italy
Picture
"I had a few days to myself after a visit to Florence, so I headed to the Italian Alps, looking for that perfect keeper shot of the jagged saw-edged ridges and rocky pinnacles of the Dolomites. I found a friendly alpenhotel in the ski town of Oritsei, where everyone speaks Italian and German, and started driving the one lane roads and alpine passes from village to town. Eventually, I landed in Santa Maddelena, a village so beautiful that it could have been conceived by some movie designer. I returned the next afternoon, hoping for good light. After jostling for position with tripods and photographers from Korea, Japan and teh UK, a few clouds appeared, a shadow settled across the valley and I got an image that I'll always remember."

Ganga Aarti Fire Ceremony
Varanasi, India
Picture
"'Older than history, older than tradition, older even than legend, and looks twice as old as all of them put together,' so said Mark Twain of Varanasi, the ancient city along the Ganges River. Wander the ancient, narrow pathways, gaze upon the burning ghats where millions have been cremated over millennia, watch the sun on the Ganges and at the end of the day, witness the hypnotic Ganga Aarti, the Hindu Fire Ceremony. One doesn't have to be spiritual to be moved by the mesmerizing experience ... only alive."

Dawn on the Golden Temple
Amritsar, India
Picture
"To the Sikhs it is known as Harmandir Sahib, "The Abode of God." Westerners know it by its appearance: the Golden Temple. Regardless of what it is called, it is to the Sikh people something akin to what Mecca is to Muslims, Jerusalem to Jews, and the Vatican to Catholics. As the sun rose, these two women in their beautiful robes entranced me. Whether gossiping or discussing the nature of God, they made a compelling sight."

Among the Believers
Taj Mahal, Agra, India
Picture
"There may be a more perfect building than the Taj Mahal, but I have yet to see it. It is a mausoleum to house Mughal emperor Shah Jahan's favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal, who died in childbirth. It is, arguably, the grandest love poem ever created. Soon after the Taj's completion, Shah Jahan was deposed by his own son and put under house arrest at nearby Agra Fort, where he could gaze on his creation from afar. After he died, he was buried next to his beloved. One part of the building is a mosque, in which these men have just finished praying."

Old Pier Strength
Grace Bay, Turks and Caicos
Picture
"There's just something exciting about the waves crashing, but the mystery of what happened to this old pier just captivated me. I sat for hours watching the waves crash, splash, and dance around this old pier that was just as sturdy as ever and refused to give to the angry waves. In January 2020, I didn't realize then that this old pier would be a metaphor for what the world was about to withstand with a global pandemic."

Sunrise at the Bean
Millennium Park, Chicago, Illinois, USA
Picture
"I was on a business trip to Chicago on a cold March morning. After 11 years living in the Chicago area, I realized I never took a picture of The Bean (Cloud Gate). I donned my coat, hat and gloves and made my way before work began that day. The cold and the early hour kept most of the tourists away, so I had this magnificent structure mostly to myself. It was worth the frozen fingers when I was greeted with this gorgeous sunrise coming up over the lake. This photo taught me not to take the beauty of our everyday for granted."
